About Southern Allegheny Valley Emergency Services

June 20, 2023 – Aspinwall and Sharpsburg Volunteer Fire Departments, two prominent organizations representing the boroughs of Aspinwall and Sharpsburg, are proud to announce the successful approval of their merger.  This historic decision brings together the rich
legacies of two fire departments, each established more than a century ago, to form a stronger and more efficient firefighting force for the communities they serve. 

The merger, which has been in discussion for the past three years, signifies an important milestone in the history of emergency services in the lower valley. Both Aspinwall VFD founded in 1893 and Sharpsburg VFD founded in 1871, have dedicated themselves to protecting lives and
property, relying solely on the commitment and selflessness of their volunteer firefighters. This
union is proof of the shared vision, collaboration, and tireless efforts of all those involved.

The combined department will operate under the name Southern Allegheny Valley Emergency
Services, honoring the legacy of both departments while forging a new path forward. With future
unified command structure and shared resources, Southern Allegheny Valley Emergency
Services will possess increased capabilities to respond swiftly and effectively to emergencies,
providing a higher level of safety for the residents and businesses of Aspinwall, Sharpsburg, and
neighboring communities.

By consolidating their strengths and expertise, Southern Allegheny Valley Emergency Services
will optimize emergency response times, enhance training programs, and streamline
administrative functions to better serve the needs of our communities. This merger is a testament
to the dedication and determination of both fire departments to continually improve the quality of
service and protection provided to our boroughs.

The commitment to preserving the unique histories of both fire departments, while embracing the
opportunities of a joint future, has been vital to the success of this endeavor.
